It's Time for "A Taste of Zanesville"

This popular annual event will be held on July 13th, 2011 from 5 to 8 pm.  It celebrates Pottery Week and features a fun-filled evening in downtown Zanesville. Participating businesses invite the public to enjoy demonstrations, crafts, refreshments, contests, a pottery toss, and great entertainment. Lorena rides are also available at 2:00 and 3:30.

Among the activities taking place that evening, the local band Mad Shadows, which specializes in 80's music, will be performing the Community Bank parking lot on Fourth Street.  Also, the Library will be hosting its annual Earth To Art display, which includes plantings and art by local artists and a silent auction.  Here's a copy of the map and a complete listing of places you can visit at the event (look under "Latest Information").

On August 5 & 6, The Y Bridge will again play host to over two hundred visual artists, craft demonstrators and performance artists along with thousands of tourists from across the region.

Two stages will spotlight performances by dancers, singers, musicians, writers and poets and presentations on our historical bridge and city. Food concessionaires will offer fare from local restaurants and area vendors. The canal area will become a children's interactive learning center with so many fun activities they are too numerous to list.

Check out the new website for the Y Bridge Arts Festival at www.ybridgeartsfestival.com.  It includes information on artists, demonstrations, children's activities, sponsorship opportunities and a schedule of events.  The event will be held on Friday, August 5, 2011, 6 pm to 9 pm and Saturday, August 6, 2011, 10 am to 9 pm.

Port Authority Marketing Shale Opportunities

The Zanesville-Muskingum County Port Authority recently added a new page to its website, www.zmcport.com, highlighting the advantages for businesses serving the oil and gas development industry.  This region of the state is expected to benefit as exploration of the Marcellus and Utica shale layers moves westward.  The potential positive economic impact of the new oil and gas drilling has been covered by the media and is being studied by a coalition of statewide organizations.

Advocates are confident that the state has the infrastructure needed to host businesses involved in the development of the shale oil and gas industry. The Port Authority is working to communicate the advantages of locating in Muskingum County and the website is part of that strategy, according to Executive Director Mike Jacoby.

Save on Workers Comp

Workers comp costs got you down?  If so here are two really good ways to save on your workers comp premiums - as much as 6% off what you pay now.

The first is by joining the local Safety Council.  Members of Safety Council, which is sponsored by the BWC Division of Safety & Hygiene and organized locally by the chamber, earn up to 4% off their premiums by attending the council's monthly meeting and meeting the other eligibility requirements which are described in detail here.   The BWC just this week approved making it possible to receive both the group rating premium discount and a partial Safety Council rebate at the same time, so be aware of this important change.

The new year for Safety Council begins July 1 and new members must join by July 31 to be eligible for the 4% rebate during this fiscal year so act now if this is something you want to pursue.  Contact Joy Riddle at the Chamber at jriddle@zmchamber.com for a membership application.

A second way to save is by participating in group rating. Participants in the Chamber's group rating program are currently saving over $2,000 on average per company, and one employer alone saved over $33,000. Premium savings estimates will be provided between now and February for the workers comp year that begins July of 2012.

For a no-cost, no-obligation premium savings estimate, go to this link and complete the simple form requesting an estimate. CareWorks Consultants Inc, our group's third party administrator, will provide the savings estimates beginning in November. Then you can decide if being in a group will save you money on your premiums.

If you only use one member benefit this month...

The business directory on
www.zmchamber.com has been searched more than 1,000 times in the last month, so you will want to be sure your online listing is expanded, customized, and up to date.

Why should you take advantage of this?  Its free (since you are a member), its easy, and it helps market your business.  How so? Experts say the more information you provide at the moment web searchers first find reference to your company, the more likely you are to turn them into a paying customer.

Think about this:

  •  Americans conduct more than 15 billion web searches per month.
  •  Nearly 80% of internet users look for information online about a service or product they are thinking of buying
  •  Google has more than a billion unique searches each month.
  • The zmchamber.com directory consistently ranks at the top of Google search results so it's a very likely way for people to find you.

That's why something simple like an expanded directory listing on www.zmchamber.com can be a boost to your business.

Here are instructions on how to expand your business listing and customize it to put your best foot forward: Expand and Customize Your Listing
