New Newsletter Format
Welcome to the first edition of our new "Membership Matters" newsletter.  Membership Matters will replace the "Welcome to Our Tradition" publication we have been publishing in conjunction with the Times Recorder.  Due to financial constraints, that publication had to be discontinued.  Membership Matters will be sent to you twice each month by email.  Obviously, in order for you to receive the newsletter, we need an email address from you.  So if you are not currently getting email messages from the chamber, please send an email to khollins@zmchamber.com so we can add your address to our list.  Each month, Membership Matters will contain valuable information that will help your business, so you won't want to miss a single issue.
Survey Results
The Chamber recently conducted a survey of some members, asking them to share what they are doing now to make more sales and retain existing customers.  Many good ideas were provided, and you may want to review the results by visiting www.zmchamber.com.  Look for the link to the "Business Practices Survey Results" on the right hand menu on the front page.   Contact Kathy Hollins at 455-8282 or go to our website at www.zmchamber.com.
Spring Break Planned for March 20
The annual Spring Break event, which is the Chamber's annual membership meeting, will be held on the first day of spring, March 20, from 7 am to 9 am.  The annual ACES awards and Safety Council Awards highlight our program, and customer service expert Dave Caperton delivers the keynote.  More than 400 people typically attend Spring Break, so you won't want to miss this big (and fun) event.  Mark your calendar now and watch your mail and email for reservations information.  Contact Joy Riddle at 455-8282 or jriddle@zmchamber.com.
Web Marketing Seminar March 17
Muskingum College is hosting a seminar on how to use electronic marketing techniques including the Internet to do free and low costs marketing of your business.  The event will be held on March 17 from 9 am to 12 noon at the Muskingum County Welcome Center.  More details will be provided soon, but you can be sure that this is one marketing event you will want to attend.

Legislative Updates
If you need information on pending state legislation that could affect your business, one place you can find it is on the Ohio Chamber of Commerce website.  The local chamber is not a branch or chapter of the state or national chambers, but we often share common, pro business goals.  The Ohio Chamber is a great source of information about what is happening in Columbus; lobbying on behalf of businesses in the state legislature is their priority.  The Ohio Chamber's legislative agenda for 2009 can be found at http://www.ohiochamber.com/governmental/agenda.asp.
Promote Products & Services with HOT DEALS!
The newest business-generating benefit for Chamber members is HOT DEALS! Members can now advertise specials or offer coupons on the Chamber website's HOT DEALS page.  Advertise sales, specials, slow-moving merchandise or grab the eye of visitors on the Chamber business directory.  HOT DEALS postings run on a weekly basis.  Postings include a title, description, category, expiration date and special offer information.  Coupons can be printed and/or emailed to friends.  Participation is easy. Design your HOT DEAL and submit through the Member Login area (www.chamberlogin.com).  The Chamber receives, reviews and approves all submissions.  Approved submissions post on the start date and are automatically removed on the ending date.  Since this benefit is for MEMBERS
ONLY, you will need to use your unique login name and password to gain access to the site.  Login names and passwords were mailed to all members last spring, however, if you don't still have this information, contact Kathy Hollins at 455-8282 or by email to khollins@zmchamber.com for assistance.

The Email Marketing Blast is a great way to send your message to the Chamber membership.  To include your message in a future Marketing Blast, submit your advertising message of 100 words or less by the 15th of each month to Kathy Hollins at khollins@zmchamber.com .  Submittals must be sent as text (no graphics, no photos) either in the body of an email or in an attached Word document.  We suggest that you include either a phone number, email address or a link to your website where people can get more information.  The cost is $50 per submission.  Contact Kathy Hollins at 455-8282 or khollins@zmchamber.com .

Bulk Mailing Service is offered to members to provide an affordable and easy way to distribute flyers, brochures and other promotional literature.  The purpose of the program is to provide members the opportunity to market their products and services and communicate with other member companies.  The Chamber conducts the mailing to its members on a monthly basis.  Members may insert a standard-sized flyer or brochure into the mailing for a fee.  The member provides the piece to be mailed, folded to fit the proper envelope size, and the Chamber provides the postage, envelope and labor, saving members both time and money.  The current cost to use the bulk mail service is $100 for the mailing and 1,100 copies of your mailing piece.  Contact Joy Riddle at 455-8282 or jriddle@zmchamber.com.
Financing and Incentives Guide
A newly updated Business Financing and Development Incentives Guide has been published by the Muskingum Growth Partnership.  The guide, which can be found in PDF format at www.zmchamber.com, includes information on dozens of loan, tax credit, tax abatement and other business assistance programs.  This guide is a valuable aid to businesses trying to find out what assistance is available to them as they work to stay competitive and grow.  Chad Bice from Rea Associates contributed his experience on tax incentive programs to help the update the guide.  You can learn more about the Muskingum Growth Partnership by visiting their website at www.zmchamber.com/ed.htm.  Contact Tom Poorman at 455-8282 or tpoorman@zmchamber.com.

The Member Services Guide has been revised and updated to provide members with descriptions and details on the benefit programs available exclusively to Chamber members.  To obtain a copy, visit our website at www.zmchamber.com and click on "Updated Member Services Guide" located on the home page. Contact Kathy Hollins at 455-8282 or khollins@zmchamber.com.

ACES Nominations Encouraged
Nominations are being accepted for the Awards for Community and Economic Success, or ACES, sponsored by the Muskingum Growth Partnership.  The annual ACES program was started to recognize firms that made an investment in their business and the community during the previous calendar year.  Self nominations are strongly encouraged.  A nomination form can be obtained by visiting www.zmchamber.com.  The awards will be presented at the Chamber's annual member meeting, called Spring Break, on March 20.  Contact Tom Poorman at 455-8282 or tpoorman@zmchamber.com.

Safety Leader's Discussion Guide
Annually, the Division of Safety & Hygiene publishes the Safety Leader's Discussion Guide. The monthly articles are written in a style that encourages participation and interaction and includes lists of additional resources. For the first time this year, DSH accepted submissions from the public and staff to create the guide.  Monthly 2009 Discussion Guide topics include: job safety analysis, computer workstation ergonomics training, traffic control/flaggers, hand tool safety, safety on the road, preventing cuts and lacerations, combustible dust in the workplace, crisis plans for schools, asbestos awareness, protecting older workers, and safety management systems.  Employers can visit

Muskingum County Promoted at Tradeshows
Muskingum County was promoted as a travel destination recently in Pigeon Forge, TN at the Tennessee Motorcoach Association (TMCA) Conference and in Charlotte, NC at the American Bus Association (ABA) Marketplace. At the TMCA Conference and ABA Marketplace, motorcoach and tour operators obtained information about Zanesville and Muskingum County's attractions, restaurants and lodging as possible stops for charters and tours. During marketplace sessions, delegates were encouraged to use Muskingum County as a destination for future trips. Experiential travel, a new and growing trend in the group tour industry, was featured as an option for groups visiting the area. If your tourism related business is interested in learning about how to market to motorcoach groups, contact Lori Kappes at 455-8282 or lkappes@zmchamber.com.

ANNUAL BUY LOCAL TV CAMPAIGN

The Chamber is teaming up once again with WHIZ-TV to put together a cooperative community-awareness campaign to promote the benefits of buying goods and services locally.  This promotion is a perfect opportunity for businesses to increase visibility at a relatively low cost per exposure.   Five different 30-second television messages will be produced, espousing the virtues of buying locally.  Each message will feature five representatives from participating businesses.  Each representative will be on-camera voicing one segment of each message, with the representative's company logo featured prominently on screen at the same time.  The messages will espouse the virtues of buying locally.  Scripts will be prepared by the Chamber and WHIZ-TV and will be provided to participating businesses. Each of the five messages will air a minimum of 20 times each week over the course of the five-week campaign tentatively slated to run from March 8th through April 11th, and will appear in Sunrise in Southeastern Ohio, The Today Show, Live at Noon, and the WHIZ-TV Reports at 6 and 11, as well as NBC and syndicated programs.  The cost to participate in this high-profile community-awareness campaign is $495 per business.  Contact Joy Riddle at the Chamber of Commerce at jriddle@zmchamber.com or by calling 455-8282 to secure your position.

MAXIMIZING OCCUPANCY AND IMPROVING CASH FLOW IN DOWNTOWN

Many years ago when a building was built or purchased in downtown Zanesville the owner would look at ways to maximize his/her cash flow. As an example, a three story structure would have the owners business on the 1st floor, the family would live on the second or third floor and the remaining upper floor space was rented as commercial or residential units.    As the suburb lifestyle evolved, many building owners moved from downtown and left the upper floors residential units vacant or converted to commercial space. Today we are experiencing a resurgence of upper floor rehabilitation for residential usage. In the fall of 2008, the ZDA organized a tour of upper floor residential units. The tour had over 70 participants who came away impressed with the residential units. Comments such as "I can't believe this is downtown" or "just like on HGTV" we heard throughout the tour. Amazing how history "reinvents itself"!
